The Not So Free Credit Report

A lot of people have been burned by companies like freecreditreport.com (I refuse to link to them). They promise a “free credit report” and then before you know it, because of very small print in the contract, they are charging your credit card monthly to monitor your credit status. Basically, they are hoping people won’t notice the monthly charges for a while before wanting to cancel the useless service. This is very similar to how the WebLoyalty scam works.

An Actual Free Credit Report

Because of all the complaints that free credit report companies have been getting, the government has required all of them to inform customers of the only true place to get a free credit report from all 3 credit bureaus: annualcreditreport.com. This is a government run website that requires all 3 credit bureaus to provide a credit report to everyone once per year. There are no strings attached. You are only eligible for this once per year, so be certain you want to pull your credit report when you do this.
